As we gear up for this year’s THE Marketing Event: Maximizing Value’, the PR Committee sat down with keynote speaker, Brent Darnell, to chat about emotional intelligence. This year’s conference theme is ‘Maximizing Value’. Can you explain how Emotional Intelligence can maximize ones potential in the workplace? Your ability to establish and maintain relationships is vital to your success. Relationships give you encouragement, information, and opportunities. Emotional intelligence is vital for this skill. But it goes beyond that. Emotions also affect our health and well-being and even cognitive processes such as problem solving and innovation. People who understand their emotions and how to manage them create success in their life and work. Companies who understand this concept increase the performance of their people and maximize their business results.

[expand title=”Read the rest of the interview here…”] On your YouTube page you mention 12 important steps to developing and maintaining great relationships. What are the top three steps that people often ignore? 1. Know yourself. This is step one, and most people shy away from taking a hard look at themselves and working on yourself to be better. 2. Make it all about the other person. This is vital. Most of us are concerned only with ourselves and focusing on our agendas. 3. Follow up, follow up, follow up. You must set aside time to follow up and maintain contact with others. If you don’t, relationships tend to atrophy. Lastly, can you give us a sneak-peak inside your keynote address for THE Marketing Event? How do you truly maximize value? There is an untapped resource that most companies have, and it is their people. Most companies have maximized their processes, but now is the time to focus on maximizing your people. The business of business is people.
