  • Magnusson Architecture and Planning, PC

As SMPS-NY’s first Member of the Month, Sarah Galus was chosen for her leadership abilities not only in her role as Marketing Manager at Magnusson Architecture and Planning, PC, but her involvement in SMPS. Her integrity and take charge attitude has made her an imperative part of our New York chapter. Below are some insights and personal information Sarah has shared with us. Let’s start by getting some perspective on you. Where are you from originally? I was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. How did you end up in New York City? My sister lived here in NYC for several years and the first time I visited her I fell in love with the city. I was 14 at the time and I knew that I had to move here after college. As the new head of the SMPS-NY Marketing Coordinator’s Club can you tell fellow members more about the goals and direction for the club? The Coordinator’s Club enables young marketers in the AEC industry a chance to meet and get together with their peers. One goal of the club is to create an open discussion on topics ranging from software programs to photography to presentations. It’s a great way to become involved in the organization in a casual environment.

At my first job here in NYC, I worked alongside Janet Checkman. She taught me so much about the AEC industry and was an integral part in helping me get to where I am today. I’ve also been blessed to work with Sally Handley, who really influenced me to become more involved in SMPS. I had been a semi-active member for a couple years, but Sally really encouraged me to join a committee. It was one of the best decisions of my professional career! What did you want to be growing up? When I was little, I always wanted to be an architect. When it was time to apply to colleges and pick a major, I realized not all aspects of architecture were for me, so I majored in Communications with a minor in Graphic Design. What is your favorite SMPS memory and what are you looking forward to for this year? My favorite SMPS memory has to be my first Holiday Party. I was on the Special Events committee and had never actually attended any past holiday parties, so I had no idea what to expect. I ended up meeting a ton of great people and realized we definitely do know how to have a good time! This year I’m looking forward to all the big events. We’re changing it up a bit and I’m excited to see how it all turns out! How does it feel to be SMPS-NY’s first Member of the Month? It’s an absolute honor!
