I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather and making some great plans for get togethers and getaways this summer. As the world continues to slowly open back up, its so great to finally start spending some time with people in person! Friends, relatives, and colleagues. Though we are all in different phases of comfort level, we can all agree we’re headed in the right direction. Our own SMPS New York community, while still operating virtually, has been very active both through our events and behind the scenes. Late spring / early summer is a time for beginning of transition for us. As you know, we recently completed our election process for a new Board of Directors who officially take office on September 1st. Some of our chapter events have also indicated a time of transition and planning for our upcoming year, including our annual Town Hall held in May, and our Annual Meeting & Liberty Ball held just last week.

Very soon, we’ll be entering a time of strategic planning, led by our chapter’s vice president/president-elect, with participants from both our current and incoming boards. It will be a time of reflection, dreaming the dreams, and establishing goals that will benefit our chapter, our members, and our AEC community at large. It’s a very exciting time for our chapter, and I am thrilled to see those who have stepped up to join our chapter’s leadership. Rest assured, you’re in excellent hands!

As I mentioned, last week we held our Annual Meeting & Liberty Ball. What a great evening we had! We recapped the year, with a summary of accomplishments and activities. So much to be thankful for, despite a very unusual year for sure. Even though our year (Sept 1 – Aug 31) has been completely virtual, this chapter remained active, vibrant, engaging, and connected. We made great strides in timely and innovative programming, and provided numerous ways to keep our members and community together. SMPS New York truly stepped up to meet the needs and expectations of our members, as best we could in a virtual world. We are so grateful for everyone’s continued engagement and positivity.

We also celebrated many individual and company accomplishments with our Professional Achievement Awards and our Marketing Communications Awards. It was very heartwarming to see the number and quality of submissions for each of our award categories this year. It was a wonderful experience announcing and celebrating these awards. Complete with breakout networking, fun videos, announcing our new Board of Directors, and raffle prizes, a great time was had by all!

In addition to the above, we hope you enjoyed our other events over the past month! On June 9th, our Leadership Committee hosted a great program, How Can I Go Out on My Own?, which shared all the pros and cons, and lessons learned, about starting your own consultancy. On June 17th, our Professional Development committee presented RFP Toolkit, which focused on storytelling as a major driver for your proposal execution. So proud of our programming planners for continuing to explore new valued topics for our members and community.

During this time of planning, we are still very active with programming and other events. Here are some upcoming dates not to be missed! Our Coordinators Club will be holding its Annual Proposal Swap on Wed, July 14th. Very popular and hugely useful – see what your colleagues are doing to help their proposals stand out! What tips and tricks can you share and pick up? Also, on Thurs, July 22nd, we will hold our SMPS-NY Virtual Committee Mixer – Learn About the Chapter! This is a great opportunity to see where you can get involved, while meeting committee leaders and other chapter members. We also have some networking events planned for August, stay tuned for those announcements!

So, what’s on your plate for this summer? Relaxing? Getting out there? Seeing friends and family? All of the above? I hope you can also use this time of transition to reflect and make awesome plans. The world is transitioning out of seclusion. And the SMPS New York chapter is transitioning to a new group leadership and new plans for the year ahead and beyond. We hope you’ll be an active part of it! I am truly excited about what’s yet to come! Let’s chat about how getting involved helps you!
