Meet Tracy Shea — our October 2019 Member of the Month!

Where are you from & what brought you to NYC?

I was raised in Jacksonville, Florida (and still a Jags fan). I came to New York almost nine years ago to join the team of an amazing woman and mentor. It was an opportunity of a lifetime that I could not turn down.

What led you to being involved on the SMPS-NY Programs Committee?

I’m a long-time listener, but first-time caller! I was actually a member of the North Florida Chapter many years ago when I was supporting a local civil engineering firm. And although my current role is not in A/E/C, I still remain very fascinated by the industry. I love following the latest updates on development projects (big and small) in and out of New York. It amazes me how civics and those complex relationships plays such an important part in our day-to-day lives. I truly appreciate what goes into and who is responsible for creating the built environment – whether it’s a new road or a revitalization effort for a forgotten part of town. I want to continue to be part of it in some way.

What do you hope to gain from your SMPS-NY membership/experience?

I see SMPS-NY as an excellent way to refine my marketing and communications capabilities while supporting an industry I am passionate about. The society is also a great way for me to expand my personal and professional network while staying abreast of industry trends. I’m really looking forward to being part of the 2019-2020 Mentor Program.

How has being a member of SMPS-NY influenced your career so far?

I joined SMPS-NY this summer and was welcomed with open arms. I have attended a few of the networking, professional development and signature events. All of which I came away with learning something I can take back to my current role. Whether it is an update on the latest communication trends and tools or inspiring a fresh perspective on how to tackle a new creative project.

We know every day is different, but what do you do in your role?

My current role is HR in nature with a focus on supporting an internal employee engagement program. In essence, I help facilitate the delivery of internal events and strategic campaigns designed to educate and elevate the employee experience across the department. Additionally, I manage the program’s communications, day-to-day operations, planning and execution for multi-city and regional activities.

What’s an ideal Saturday for you?

An ideal Saturday is getting back to nature in anyway and sharing that time with great friends.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love taking mini field trips to out-of-the-way places across New York State. Have you been to Ithaca? It’s Gorges!! I also spend lots of time fixing up a place at Little Camp Polly’s Rock in the Northern Catskills.

Where can we see you in 5 years?

I hope to be even more fully immersed in the built environment. Perhaps in the capacity of marketer or business development manager supporting an A/E/C firm whose focus is on urban revitalization and sustainable planning in New York state.
