May’s member of the month, Christine Tuomey, who serves as the marketing coordinator at Langan has become a valued asset to the SMPS New York chapter. As a member of the Professional Development Committee, among other programs, she has helped organize the upcoming June professional development event, Are you Talking About Me? A Workshop on Leadership Style and Impact, which promises to be a quintessential program for both senior and junior level marketers. So let’s learn more about this Maryland native as Christine has shared some of her thoughts and ideas with us. 1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York City? I was raised in Rockville, Maryland, outside Washington, DC. I attended school in the DC area and worked for a Maryland-based civil engineering firm for two years. I have always loved New York City and hoped that one day I would move there. The timing seemed right about two years ago so I decided to make the jump and have never looked back. I never thought of Maryland as the South growing up, until I moved here. Now I realize that it really is! 2. What college and/or university did you attend and what area did you study? I received a B.S. in Marketing from the University of Maryland. I noticed that April’s Member of the Month, Patricia Grew is a fellow UMD alum, which makes me really proud.

When I moved to NYC two years ago, I started attending SMPS events and was making connections but I really wanted to get more out of the organization and become involved. I really enjoyed the PD events I attended in the past and thought it would be an interesting committee to join. I have been involved with the committee for less than a year but the experience has already been extremely rewarding. The Leadership sub-committee event on June 20th I think will be thought-provoking for marketers at all levels and a great event to attend. 4. What is your favorite pastime? I love spending time with my huge extended family and my friends. I am a die-hard DC sports fan and have carried that loyalty to NYC with me. My favorite pastimes include attending or watching games with my family and friends. I even ventured to Yankee Stadium during an Orioles playoff game last year…and realized that all the rumors about New York sports fans are true. I now have some sympathy for Red Sox fans. 5. As a junior-level marketer, what impact has being an SMPS member had on your career thus far? The impact of SMPS on my career thus far has been invaluable. As a junior-level marketer I joined the Mentor Program this past year and was matched with a fantastic mentor who has really helped guide me and give incredibly helpful lessons that I have used in my career. Everyone in SMPS is genuinely helpful and willing to answer any questions I have as a junior marketer. After making so many connections through SMPS it is definitely less intimidating to walk into a room at an event and already know some friendly faces!
