Meet Alexa B. Antopol – our March 2019 Member of the Month!

Where are you from & what brought you to NYC?

I was born in New York City and spent my childhood in the woods in Connecticut. I came back immediately after college — I knew as a then-recent performing arts graduate this was where I wanted to be. And I conveniently was chosen for the Juilliard Professional Intern Program (now the Professional Apprentice Program) as a stage manager, so that worked out well.

What led you to being involved on the Professional Development Committee? (And any other involvement!)

I got involved with the Professional Development Committee through my interest in continuing education. There’s always more to learn and new people to learn from (and with!). I also spent some time with CxC to improve my InDesign skills. It’s wonderful that SMPS-NY offers a variety of Professional Development opportunities to their membership.

What do you hope to gain from your SMPS-NY membership/experience?

I hope to meet more folks in the A/E/C field and build new relationships! Connecting with other members through learning about their personal and professional experiences is inspiring.

How has being a member of SMPS-NY influenced your career so far?

My background is in neither marketing nor the A/E/C field — my degrees are in theater production and library science — and SMPS has been my intensive, immersive study for both areas. I wouldn’t be able to do my job nearly as well as I do now without the resources provided by SMPS-NY.

We know every day is different, but what do you do in your role at Fisher Dachs?

I do a little bit of everything! For nearly five years, I have been a solo practitioner responsible for business development, marketing, PR, proposal preparation, conference planning and logistics, social media, and just about anything else. In December 2018 we hired a second full-time staff member (Richard Hackman!) for the department and now we’re taking on the world together.

What’s an ideal Saturday for you?

A big homemade breakfast with my husband, author Nicholas Kaufmann, followed by a walk around our historic Brooklyn neighborhood and a visit to the Central Library, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, or the Brooklyn Museum. Maybe a movie or Netflix during inclement weather. The two cats are not suddenly clawing me to shreds.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I read a lot of Sci-Fi and fantasy fiction. Like, a lot. I go to see theatre and opera as often as possible. Last summer I went axe throwing for the first time and I long to go again. I run a couple of half-marathons each year. The two cats often require my attention for extended laser pointer chasing sessions and intermittent petting. Nick requires laser pointers and intermittent conversation.

Where can we see you in 5 years?

You’ll see me at Fisher Dachs bringing in new business and supporting my colleagues as we design the theaters of the future — places where performing artists and audiences can have intimate and dynamic experiences together.
