Meet Kimberly Graham — our June 2019 Member of the Month!

Where are you from and what brought you to NYC?

Aside from four years of college in Baltimore at Loyola University and a brief trip around the world to New Zealand for a study abroad program, I’ve always called northern New Jersey home – you can’t beat the hustle and bustle of nearby New York City or the taylor ham and cheese bagels! All joking aside, I have always known that living in a fast-paced environment has encouraged my creativity, and I wanted to maximize my potential – my home state made the most sense.

What led you to being involved on the SMPS-NY New Jersey Affiliate Committee?

I’m lucky enough to have my aunt in the industry (shout out to Diane Kozel!), who is my mentor, advocate, and sounding board. SMPS has always been an organic part of our conversations, and I’ve grown up hearing about the network of lifelong friends she’s made through her involvement. That knowledge, coupled with encouragement from my colleague and SMPS mentor, Liz Archer, led me to the NJ Affiliate Chapter, who welcomed me with open arms!

What do you hope to gain from your SMPS-NY membership/experience?

I think as a marketer it’s important to know your strengths and to find the best avenues to serve your organization, but there’s also a lot of value in trying to improve in the things you find scary or don’t have an innate knack for. For me, it’s always been networking and walking into a room with no safety net or familiar faces, which I’ve been able to overcome by attending industry events. SMPS has really been a vehicle for me to become more well-rounded, and I hope to soak in as much information as I can from the many industry experts in our chapter, as well as to share my own knowledge and best practices with others. The beauty of being an SMPS member is that I can continue to excel in the things I love by connecting with those who share my interests, and I can also grow in the areas that challenge me through the wisdom of others. And as an aside to any new or potential members who may be reading this and feel intimidated by networking events – everyone in SMPS is so friendly! Just come say hi!

How has being a member of SMPS-NY influenced your career so far?

I can’t speak enough about the sense of community that SMPS provides! Having fellow marketers and peers to collaborate with and learn from has been invaluable and has given me a fresh perspective to the way I approach my day-to-day work. The workshops I’ve attended and particularly the SMPS Mentorship Program have encouraged me to pursue what inspires me, to set and accomplish attainable goals, and to advocate for myself – pretty powerful stuff!

We know every day is different, but what do you do in your role at Stantec?

My role at Stantec as a Senior Marketing Coordinator is multi-faceted, which keeps me motivated and on my toes. You can find me managing the marketing efforts for Stantec’s four New Jersey offices and supporting our overall Tri-State region in transportation infrastructure and renewable energy initiatives. Over the past five years, this has involved leading proposal pursuits, writing and creating promotional material, managing and developing content for our website, keeping our systems up to date (which we all know can be a full-time job of its own!), writing awards submissions, supporting our leadership, and researching industry trends.

What’s an ideal Saturday for you?

Sleeping in on Saturday is a must! Likely followed by a good book, a workout, a new restaurant, a glass of wine, and some retail therapy. Relaxing and recharging are what my weekends are all about!

What do you like to do in your free time?

When I’m not immersed in marketing projects, I’m likely reading a book… about marketing (how meta!) or by Stephen King, who I love. Road trips and traveling are high priorities, with Napa, Greece, and New Orleans topping my 2020 bucket list. Working out and running also keep me sane.

Where can we see you in five years?

Hopefully I’ll be Kimberly Graham, CPSM! I certainly see myself continuing to contribute to the success of Stantec in bigger and better ways, leveraging my love of writing to promote our message, which centers around community, creativity, and client relationships. I also hope to adopt a larger role within the SMPS world as the years go on through committee membership, leadership positions, and mentorship.
