Meet Jessica Ng – our January 2019 Member of the Month! Since joining SMPS-NY, Jessica has attended our member events, expanding her network and skillset, and become an active member on the Professional Development Committee. Get to know more about Jessica in our exclusive interview!

Where are you from & what brought you to NYC?

I was born in Hong Kong, located on the east of the Pearl River Delta that was once a British colony and is now a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. When I was a toddler, my family immigrated to the U.S. looking for a better life and raised my siblings and me in New York’s Chinatown, one of the oldest such districts in the country.

My first stint was with a magazine firm where I was an ad sales assistant. I quickly realized that the magazine world wasn’t my calling.  Back then, we didn’t have Monster, Glassdoor, or LinkedIn; we had the New York Times, which posted job openings in their classified section. I had applied for a Marketing position with a Construction Management firm, and from that moment on I’ve never looked back.

What led you to being involved on the Professional Development Committee?

I had thought about getting involved with one of the SMPS-NY committees and wasn’t sure which one would suit me the best. In Spring 2018, I met Nathan Reyna of Mancini Duffy and Director of SMPS-NY Public Relations at one of the SMPS-NY Spirit events; he was extremely helpful in explaining the various committees. He gave me a good piece of advice in selecting a committee of choice, saying, “most people select a committee based on what they are familiar with…instead select a committee you are likely to be unfamiliar with…this way you will learn something new in a no-risk environment.” With this in mind, I joined the Professional Development Committee, and it was the best decision I have made as a member of SMPS-NY.

What do you hope to gain from your SMPS-NY membership/experience?

The key word is learning! I’m a big believer that no matter how young or old you are, you should strive to learn new things every day. When you stop learning, you put yourself at a disadvantage – it’s less competitive. SMPS-NY has a great library of resources on their website and hosts many special events to help marketers build their skills. I’ve found this to be helpful.  The SMPS-NY events and committees are a wonderful way to connect and develop a long-lasting relationship with your colleagues and peers. It is also a great way to build your business development skills.

How has being a member of SMPS-NY influenced your career so far?

One of the many benefits of being a member of SMPS-NY is building my professional skills and knowledge to better positioning my firm success in the industry. Building relationships with my colleagues and peers has its advantages.  I’m constantly sharing notes and developing potential collaboration opportunities.

We know every day is different, but what do you do in your role at Acoustic Distinctions?

Aside from the everyday norm of putting proposals and qualifications packages together, I’m also developing my business development skills by attending SMPS-NY events, industry events, etc. I work closely with Acoustic Distinctions’ senior and junior consultants to develop their skills in business development as well. I’ve found that the key success of getting your people to be involved in business development is finding out what works for them – it’s not a cookie cutter approach. Each person has their strength and weakness, and there is a lot of legwork to do in order to find the right plan that works for each person.

What’s an ideal Saturday for you?

Saturday is my decompressing day! What do I do to decompress? It depends on the seasons, in the Spring/Summer/Fall I would go for long walks and take photos. When it’s cold, I prefer to be at my cozy home, watching movies on Netflix or reading a book, and cooking a nice meal and enjoying a glass of Chardonnay or Pinot Noir.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Photography is a passion of mine – I love capturing landscapes, people in action, and natural details. I love the fact that I can capture an image to express a moment of time or place through my perspective.

If I am spending time at the Michigan lakes, I would go fishing with my nephew, brother, and sister-in-law.

Where can we see you in 5 years?

Continuing to drive the strong business development program for my firm.
