Meet Heather Faulls — our April 2019 Member of the Month!

Where are you from and what brought you to NYC?

I grew up with a view of the Manhattan skyline, my Northern New Jersey childhood home was just an 8-minute drive away. I remember going to the city as a kid with my family and weaving through the throngs of people, loving the exhilarating feeling from being in the city and I remember thinking, one day I’m going to live here. Almost a decade ago, I moved to Park Slope and I have the best of both worlds — all the amenities of the city, a community-neighborhood feel, and the beauty of Prospect Park just steps away.

What led you to being involved on the Communications/Public Relations Committee?

I left the children’s book publishing industry to make the leap into AEC in 2015 and I joined SMPS in an effort to learn more about the industry and expand my skill set. I’ve always loved writing, so the Communications/PR Committee seemed like a great way for me to use my writing and design skills in a new way.

What do you hope to gain from your SMPS-NY membership/experience?

I feel very lucky to have come across so many warm, welcoming — not to leave out brilliant — women and men in the industry who made me feel included right away. I look forward to continuing to develop those relationships in addition to learning and growing within the Communications/PR Committee.

How has being a member of SMPS-NY influenced your career so far?

Over the duration of my time with SMPS-NY, I’ve had the opportunity to work with both the Special Events and the Communications/PR Committees. It’s been a blast and I highly recommend joining a committee, it’s a great way to dig deeper into the field and get some risk-free hands-on experience working with people across all levels of the AEC industry.

We know every day is different, but what do you do in your role at ABB?

As Marketing Manager at ABB, a landscape architecture firm with over 50 years of design experience, I am responsible for a wide range of marketing and business development tasks. This can vary depending on the day. I regularly oversee pursuits, run our social media, create presentations and, recently, I oversaw the development of the writing and design for our new website.

What’s an ideal Saturday for you?

Summer is my favorite time of year so I’m looking forward to the warm weather. An ideal day for me would be spending the entire day outside, which could be a beach day, a picnic in the park or really any plan that includes exploring different parts of Brooklyn on foot or bicycle. I’m the type of person who will always take the outdoor table at a restaurant as long as the weather is close to resembling appropriate outdoor seating weather and the person I’m with is willing.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Aside from being out in nature, I love playing strategy games, seeing live music, going to art galleries or museums, binge-watching shows on Netflix and catching up with friends.

Where can we see you in 5 years?

I enjoy working in the AEC industry and look forward to growing and evolving within my role as well as expanding my writing and design skills.
