Shampoos and Shakers: A look into SMPS-NY New Jersey Affiliate’s Spirits Event

The SMPS-NY New Jersey Affiliate kicked off its third annual Holiday Spirits Event on January 24th at Daikin Applied Solutions’ Showroom in Jersey City. With panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline in the background, over 30 marketing professionals networked while enjoying delicious food and drink provided by Hudson Greene Market and in-kind sponsor, Daikin.

For this year’s event, we partnered with Jersey Cares, a non-profit organization based out of Livingston, New Jersey, who assists underprivileged communities through coat drives, toy collections and various corporate partnerships. Attendees assembled ‘First Night Kits’ for individuals in need at domestic violence shelters, transitional housing facilities, foster homes and other transitional housing/life programs in need of hygiene items on the “first night” away. People who find themselves in crisis situations often forget to pack an overnight bag or don’t have access to one. These pre-assembled kits help make these difficult transitions as easy as possible and can sustain an individual for an entire week if needed. Items included in the kit are shampoos, soaps, lotion, toothpaste/toothbrushes, deodorant, socks, underwear and t-shirts.

Attendees arrived with multiple bags in tow, resulting in four full boxes of kits collected by the end of the night! We also offered a virtual donation option for those who couldn’t attend in person or couldn’t grab items in time. This was a great alternative and allowed non-SMPS members to donate this wonderful cause. The virtual drive collected $400 within the first two weeks and raised over $500 in total! A huge thanks to everyone who donated – whether it was monetary or simply just your time.
