Flights and Frights! Event Recap!

Something wicked this way came…and networked!

Last Thursday members of the SMPS New York-NJ Affiliate Chapter visited the Riverhorse Brewery in Ewing, New Jersey to network with fellow members of the AEC industry while tasting some fall-themed flights.

The event was organized by SMPS, Licensed Site Remediation Professionals Association (LSRPA), the Association of Environmental Geologists – New York-Philadelphia (AEG-NY-P), Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals of NJ (AHMP NJ), New Jersey Society of Women Environmental Professionals (SWEP), and Society of American Military Engineers (SAME).

The night began with icebreakers and scavenger hunts, asking attendees to find a Professional Geologist, a member of SMPS, and define PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), among other technical and spooky questions. Seasoned and aspiring professionals alike mingled, exchanged business cards, candies, and personal experiences in the field and office. Members of niche environmental firms and nationally-recognized corporations shared ideas over Halloween candy and pumpkin-flavored beer.

The beer-tasting process at Riverhorse worked seamlessly into the networking time. The Brewery provided attendees with a bracelet that included five tickets in exchange for five free samples. Among the many samples provided, the standouts were Hipp-O-Lantern and Hippotizing IPA, with Sour Henry being a surprisingly refreshing palate cleanser.

The night ended with a successful raffle – sending lucky winners home with noise-canceling headphones, wireless speakers, Riverhorse gift cards and even a Star Wars-themed toaster! Overall attendees enjoyed some good food, great flights, and insightful conversation. Co-organizing this event with LSRPA, AEG, SWEP, AHMP NJ, and SAME created some lasting connections and we hope to participate in more events like this in the future.
