I’m excited to once again join SMPS New York on September 29 for our fifth year of programming jointly. Our 2016 Mayors’ Forum adds a new layer with Melissa Kaplan-Macey, Connecticut Director ofthe Regional Plan Association, leading the discussion. Her discussion of RPA’s recent report, Charting a New Course: A Vision for a Successful Region and the upcoming Fourth Regional Plan will create a framework for the discussion. I’m looking forward to the mayors’ dialogue about how the region’s urban landscape is expected to shift and how we,as professionals in the A/E/C industry, can be a part of this revitalization.
Learning from and connecting with so many Mayors at a single event is a great advantage. Each Mayor has a different perspective on how to engage the Fourth Regional Plan with their local constituency and also the larger region. This allows us all to think big picture when contributing to these shifts in our area. The collaboration between our organizations—the Construction Institute and SMPS New York—has added so much value to both our membership bases. It has also provided an opportunity for each group to connect with consultants and other firms who can contribute to the larger discussion at hand: How can we impart the change in our communities?
If you have not been able to attend a past Mayors’ Forum, I encourage you to take part this year. The panel includes six Mayors spanning Westchester County, New York, and Fairfield and New Haven County, Connecticut. The discussion is sure tobe lively yet informative, and will help catapult this vital region forward.
