November’s Member of the Month is a recent addition to our chapter, but is quickly becoming a quintessential part of our activities. Shannon Koop serves as a marketing coordinator at MFS Consulting Engineers while offering her skills to the communications and NJ affiliate committees. She is creative, outgoing and personable. Her dedication is realized and appreciated. Let’s read below as we learn more about Shannon and her journey into the A/E/C world.

[expand title=”Read the interview here…”] Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York? I was born in Morristown, NJ and grew up in Lopatcong (north west), New Jersey. I always knew I’d be working, in some way, in NYC. It was just a matter of when and how. In 2012 I left my job in sports for a Marketing Coordinator position at MFS Consulting Engineers, a certified MBE, DBE, SBE, SBA 8(a) heavy civil engineering firm based out of South Plainfield, NJ. In 2014 we officially moved into our office on 34th Street, better enabling us to attack the market in NYC. I currently work out of NJ but try to be in the city at least once a week. As a junior-level marketer, what impact has being an SMPS member had on your career thus far? Learning a new industry coupled with trying to build a marketing department was a struggle in the beginning. The fundamentals are the same, but the applications are very different. I was looking for blogs about AEC Marketing when I stumbled across a Brand Engagement event held by SMPS-NY in early 2013. I attended and was hooked. It was, and is, an incredible resource. SMPS-NY has become a combination of sounding boards, mentors, friends and colleagues. I seized the opportunity to serve on multiple committees and collaborate with marketers of all levels. What college and/or university did you attend and what area did you study? I graduated from Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ with a degree in Organizational Communications. My studies focused primarily on identifying personalities and how to create a successful working environment for groups. What exciting things can we look forward to involving the New Jersey Affiliate? We’ve been getting a great turnout for our Spirits events. Our Holiday/Winter party is coming up at the Daikken Showroom in Jersey City which is an easy commute out of the city. And best for last: we are very excited to be hosting our own program this spring! Can you tell us more about the Uber Planning Committee? We have a FANTASTIC group of volunteers. I cannot brag about them enough. We set some very ambitious goals for 2015 and I think we’ve got the wisdom and knowledge in our committees to make it happen. There is a lot experience and passion for SMPS that I think is going to result in a high quality program that the industry will be looking forward to each year. Can you suggest any great marketing blogs for our members? I don’t consistently visit any particular blog. I’m incredibly critical of any information I come across online and need to know more about the blogger to feel that the info is reliable, so I tend to look more towards what my peers, mentors, and industry leaders are sharing. I’m also a big fan of staying on top of what our clients and competition are sharing as well. Recently, I have been reading a lot of what David Meerman Scott, 2015 SMPS NERC Über Keynote Speaker (shameless plug), has to say. He’s got some great insights on staying competitive within your market. It takes a creative eye to apply it to the AEC industry – but it can be done! I know he’s working on something AWESOME for Über. [/expand]
