Kourtenay Mott
  • Awards Program Chair, Special Events Committee
If you have not yet had the pleasure to speak with May’s Member of the Month, you should certainly make the time to. You may recognize Kourtenay Mott’s name from her role as the Awards Program Chair for the Special Events Committee where she has spent her time reviewing nominations in preparation for this year’s awards gala in June. Originally from South Carolina, she has adapted well to New York as the Marketing Manager at One Lux Studio, LLC. Her talents and enthusiasm in our industry are to be admired. Let’s read below as Kourtenay has shared some thoughts and ideas with us.

[expand title=”Click here to read the interview…”] Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York City? I am originally from South Carolina (hey y’all!) but always knew I’d come to New York City eventually. I had the opportunity to move right out of a college with a group of girlfriends but ultimately decided not to – I think fear got the best of me. Everything works out for a reason, though, because when I had the opportunity to try it again, I had already made the move to the AEC industry and was able to continue my career in the field in NYC. Sometimes things don’t work out at a certain time for whatever reason, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work out in the future. What degree(s) do you hold, and from what schools? I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism/Mass Communications from the University of South Carolina (Go Gamecocks!). My degree was in the Advertising/Public Relations track, and I did practice PR for about six years before making the switch to professional services marketing. Luckily, all of these fields go hand-in-hand with each other and it’s easy to apply things I’ve learned from other jobs into what I do for my firm now. Describe your perfect Saturday. A perfect Saturday includes: 75-degree weather, waking up early, brunch with friends, shopping, a nice glass of wine, and, if I’m lucky, a fun celebrity sighting! Can you tell us more about your involvement with the Special Events Committee and what new things the committee is working on? First of all, let me say the Special Events Committee is so much fun. Everyone should join. Seriously! I am currently the Awards Program Chair, so I’ve been helping Sarah Galus, the Director of the Special Events Committee, organize the award submissions, judging, and other various components of the Awards Program. It has been a blast. We received so many talented nominations this year, and I can’t wait to see them recognized at the Awards Gala (which, by the way, is June 4 – have you bought your tickets yet?). Other events we work to plan: the annual Holiday Party, Member Appreciation Event, and all of the fun Spirits events. I have met so many people from being involved in this committee. It’s a great way to get involved in the chapter and have fun while doing so! What blogs do you read on a regular basis? I am pretty obsessed with blogs, so I have quite a few. Curbed NY and The Real Deal (daily edition) are two work-related ones I enjoy, and Gawker is a guilty pleasure that I read every day. Others include Daily Intelligencer, Refinery29, Brooklyn Vegan, and The Billfold. I highly recommend Feedly as an RSS reader![/expand]
