If you are planning on attending TME this year, you may want to pay a special thank you to June’s Member of the Month! Jessica Schrader currently serves as a senior project manager at CVEDesign, while simultaneity dedicating her time and efforts to the Special Events Committee and the planning of TME. With a background in communications design, her talents are appreciated daily on behalf of our New York chapter. As she explains below, Jessica prefers to engage with people while being able to appreciate all that New York City can offer within the design industry. Let’s read below, as Jessica has shared some of her thoughts and ideas with us.

  1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York City?
I’m originally from Annapolis, Maryland. I always knew New York City was the epicenter of design in America—a place of endless opportunity where the boundaries of design were constantly being pushed—and I wanted to be a part of that! That’s why I moved here over ten years ago (whoa, that makes me feel old), and I’ve never left.
  2. What motivated you to join the Special Events Committee and what can you tell us about the upcoming TME event?
Honestly, when I started thinking about which committees to join, I wanted to join them all. I’m naturally someone who would rather be busy, involved, and engaged. I’m a graphic designer by trade, so my strengths lie in the creative aspects of the industry, which mainly consists of staring at a computer all day. After a lot of research, I decided to join the committee I felt would allow me to build on my knowledge of design and strengthen my skills in networking and business development, as well as exercise my project management experience to plan events. There are so many great things to say about TME this year. We have the honor of working with a fantastic community of experts to put on a truly top-tier event. The theme, “The Power of Storytelling in AEC Marketing & Business Development” has so many different avenues to explore and build on. The call for presentations recently went out- make sure to send in your materials by June 22nd!
  3. What are some challenges that you face daily in your career and how do you overcome them?
The main challenge I face day to day is time management. That skill is essential in my workplace– CVEDesign is a boutique design firm made up of six people. I have to constantly switch gears because, depending on what I’m working on at the time, my responsibilities can change significantly. One moment I could be working on a proposal, the next I could be designing a signage system. It only works through ruthless organization: prioritizing tasks, planning ahead, and staying flexible. These are the ways I’ve been able to succeed. Also, I’ve learned it’s okay to say no.
  4. What degree(s) do you hold, and from what school(s)?
I hold a BFA in Communications Design from Pratt Institute.
  5. Describe your perfect Saturday.
My perfect Saturday involves sleeping in, curling up with a good book and my cat, Pippin, and ordering copious amounts of Thai food. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a long week!
