Marketing Manager Langan

Atena Vladu
  • Co-Chair, Membership Committee
April’s Member of the Month has contributed to our industry and chapter in various ways, particularly with her efforts as the co-chair of the Membership Committee. She explains below that she chose to be a part of that committee because it allows her to meet new people on a regular basis. With her gregarious personality and interest in urban planning and travel, Atena Vladu is a true asset to our New York chapter. Let’s read below as Atena has shared some of her thoughts and ideas with us.

[expand title=”Click here to read the interview…”] Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York City? I was born in Romania but moved to Brooklyn at the age of four. I consider myself a true New Yorker and can’t imagine living anywhere else. How has being a member of SMPS influenced your career? SMPS is an amazing organization comprised of individuals from most if not all the key firms in New York City. It has been a wonderful resource for me over the last 14 years of my career. I have been attending SMPS events for as long as I have been in the industry and over the last 5 years have been a truly engaged member of the organization. My career began with the help of Gina Bedoya, past SMPS president, who took the time to introduce me to SMPS and to the AEC industry. I never imagined that my marketing degree would lead me to the field of construction and now I can’t imagine doing anything else. What is your favorite pastime? In my spare time I love to travel. There is not a place in this world I wouldn’t love to see and I make sure to always admire the architecture of an area when I visit. Some of my favorite architecture is in New Orleans. It’s a beautiful mix of architectural styles and you can’t help but admire how the new buildings are true to the old style of the city. I also enjoy reading and time exploring my own backyard of NYC. What motivated you to join the Membership Committee and what is the committee currently working on? I love meeting new people and the Membership Committee seemed like the perfect place for me to get involved and meet some new people along the way. As a committee member, I get to welcome our newest members and come up with fun ways to get our almost 300 members engaged within the organization. I work with an amazing group of people with some very creative ideas and we are all united in the idea that an engaged community of marketing professionals will attract more members and keep them with us for many years. Currently we are working on a new member incentive program and ways to get our existing members and their principals involved in the organization. We are always looking for new ideas and would love to get feedback and ideas from our members. If you could choose any other profession what would it be and why? If I had to choose another career, I wouldn’t sway too far from the industry. Being in the AEC industry has exposed me to areas that I had not thought much about while I was in school. As a freshman in college I was determined to be a Psychologist. In my sophomore year I changed my major to elementary education. It wasn’t until junior year that I realized that marketing was what I really wanted to do. Fourteen years into my marketing career in the AEC industry, I have developed a real interest in the urban environment and the planning of communities and urban spaces. If I had to choose a new career, Urban Planning would be top of my list.[/expand]
