The surf was definitely up at SMPS New York’s well-attended Surf’s Up Member Appreciation Event last week! SMPS New York members got a chance to celebrate their successes within the chapter and reflect on all of the exceptional events held over the past year.
It was a glorious night to recognize this year’s hard working individuals and dedicated SMPS New York committees that devote their precious time and dedication to our successful chapter and affiliate events.
These dudes and dudettes weren’t shy of a little NYC rain, and all came out to hang ten at the historic Mad Hatter Beer Garden in New York City. While the surfer anthems played, members sipped their tiki tumblers, and enjoyed delicious bbq-surfer themed hors d’oeuvres while networking and socializing amongst one another, to the epic backdrop of a slideshow showcasing this year’s gnarly wave of events.
Towards the end of the evening, SMPS New York Chapter President Robin Carathanasis, Lilker Associates, announced the Committee Volunteer Awards. These special awards recognized those in our chapter who have shown exceptional service to their respective committees. Those recognized include:
Communications – Lucy Finnegan, Horizon Engineering Associates, LLP
Leadership – Elizabeth Bellsey, BAM Architecture Studio
Long Island Affiliate – Melissa Slavin, Bohler Engineering
New Jersey Affiliate – Chris Pedecine, D&B Engineering
Westchester Affiliate – Adria DeWitt Campbell
Membership – Amy Stroud, Dattner Architects
Professional Development – Kirsten Haas, Acoustic Distinctions
Programs – Matt Barlow, Dattner Architects
Public Relations – Fadi Asmar, LERA
Special Events – Nicole Veenstra, Langan
TME – Monica Hatcher, Arup
Sponsorship – Elana Lesser Gilbert, Cerami & Associates, Inc.
But we didn’t’ stop there! After attendees had the chance to vote, the Grand Finale of this surfer celebration, ended with the announcement of the “Member’s Choice Awards.” These special awards were a fun way to recognize those who really go above and beyond for our chapter:
(most likely to become CMO) – Erika Capek, BuroHappold Engineering.
The Chapter Surfer Dude
(our chapter cheerleader) – Nathan Reyna, Goshow Architects
Chapter Swell Champion
(the most connected member) – Andrew Weinberg, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH).
The crowd celebrated with a big round of applause, as Erika, Nathan, and Andrew opened their surfer themed prizes and commenced to take a memorable picture of them in their sunglasses, straw hats, and life-preserver themed trophies.
It was truly a night to remember, celebrating the incredible work of our SMPS New York team. Special thanks to the Special Events committee for a great time – what a way to catch a wave!
