Everyone starts the new with lofty goals – but often resolve wanes come February. Maybe it’s just the grey skies that make us weary. This year, I’d like to make an easy suggestion for you. Take advantage of the Society’s Lunchtime Learning Labs which are…wait for it… FREE for SMPS members.

Click here read more about SMPS Lunchtime Learning Labs...

Offered every other month, the Lunchtime Learning Labs, are 45-60 minute programs that cover a very wide variety of topics including InDesign, Proposal Blunders, Compelling Social Media Strategies, SEO, and even transitioning from Marketer to Owner.

The sessions are all recorded and archived on mysmps.org so even if you missed a session, you can always go back and listen to it later. If you’re a CPSM, they are also worth 1 CEU each making it an easy way to keep your credentials up to date.

So if you do anything this year, make it an investment in yourself, and your career!

Today’s tip: Work Your Network! Work the Directory!
Recently, I was tasked with helping my firm’s DC and Chicago offices’ business development efforts. SMPS network strikes again! After some strategic planning and determining our client targets, I immediately put the MySMPS Directory to work.

Forget six degrees of separation, with our outstanding network, we are never more than one or two steps away. Call or email, identify yourself as a fellow SMPS member, and you’re golden. And just as you are finding others, don’t forget that others are finding you. Make sure your profile is complete, not just your personal information, but your firm’s capabilities and markets. Searches can be very specific, so the more detail you have the better. I’m now regularly using this amazing directory to find key local players with the right experience, expertise, M/W/DBE designations, etc. Use this tool, but also work it by being “findable”! Good luck, and please share your success stories! Email me at ajweinberg@sgh.com.

The MySMPS Communities page is the home for many “sub”committees to serve your various interests and areas of SMPS involvement.

There are communities for chapters, committees, CPSMs, Fellows, conferences, and a plethora of specific interests. For example, those of you using InDesign as part of your daily work should check out the “Adobe Creative(ity)” community, and join! You can also create your own community and invite others. Communities offer the opportunity to start discussions, write blogs, track events or meetings, and provide storage documents easily accessed by other community members. Communities can be private for specified users only, or open to the “public” (SMPS membership). You can also decide on the frequency for receiving messages from your communities. What’s your success story? There are many benefits to being a member of SMPS. Perhaps at the very top of this list is the tremendous network you garner. I would like to share a small success story. One night last week, at about 10:30 PM, I received an urgent email from the leaders of my firm’s Chicago office. Submitting on a proposal the next day for a project in Michigan, they were in need of a mechanical engineer to add to their team. I immediately turned to my SMPS network.

I checked the MySMPS member directory by doing an “Advanced Search.” I found a great firm with the right expertise and experience, and they even had prior projects with the client. I also checked the SMPS Michigan chapter website and found that two of their board members worked for this firm. Perfect! I reached out to them within 30 minutes of getting this urgent request. And by first thing the next morning, they were on board! This is one small example of how the MySMPS member directory can help you every day! And another reason to make sure your profile page is fully filled out – so you and your firm can be found!

Your Network is Bigger Than You Know!

The MySMPS membership directory is a deep well of contacts at your fingertips! So many great reasons for tapping this resource. And the advanced search criteria can be as broad or specific as you like. Say you need to find an acoustics firm in Dallas or an environmental firm in Peoria. No problem! And if your search comes up short, you can always tap local architects for recommendations. One thing we know about fellow SMPS members is that we are always happy to help each other. I’ve experienced these connections in both directions. Once you identify yourself as a fellow SMPS member (from wherever you are), lines of communication open right up!
