What does professional achievement mean for you?

For some, achieving means having others view them as successful; for others achieving means to do something they have longed to do regardless what others may think. A dictionary definition of achievement is “to accomplish something, especially by great effort or great courage”. How do we measure the value of the recognition of our achievements versus the achievement itself? (more…)

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”— Winston Churchill. This quote struck a cord with me. It prompted me to think more inclusively about my service, my efforts at volunteerism. While I was fortunate enough to be handed down the spirit of giving back and paying forward by parents who embraced that idea, I realized that I needed to broaden my scope of possibilities. (more…)

Giving and receiving gifts is always a welcome activity in my life. It brings such joy to see the receiver of a gift light up with glee when they receive something special. And truth be told, I love getting a present (hint, hint-JK), especially when it is a surprise. Being the recipient of the gift has its own special sentiments especially when the offering is an expression of the thoughtfulness of the giver. I had the good fortune earlier this year of being part of a workshop exercise, which asked each of us to actively listen to the goals of our group members, as expressed through a story. We had to respond with a suggestion that would help them bring a goal or aspiration one step closer to realization. Our group of marketers, of varying experience levels, had to openly relate a goal, personal or professional and in return those of us listening gave our written response on a gift card. The recipient of the gift card could then do as they wish with the gift. (more…)

I attended the Women’s March in Albany, NY this past January. It was one of many hundreds of marches throughout the state, the country and the world. There I witnessed what was seemingly a sea of women walking strong in the streets of Albany. The march concluded at West Capital Park, which is wedged between the State Assembly building and the NY State Capital, for the speeches that sought to capture the spirit of the event. What I truly saw, in the crowd of 7,000 strong, was a canvas of women (some young, some very old), children, veterans, people of color, men, disabled people, immigrants from all sorts of places, middle aged, LGBT folks, and many others. To me, it was a continuation of the conversation of the SMPS Diversity and Inclusion lunch that I had participated in just one day prior. (more…)

The greatest gifts are personal. They are the gifts that aren’t about the gift itself, but rather about the human connection. That someone has taken the time to really see you—acknowledging and celebrating who you are. (more…)

Travels abroad always give me the space to breathe and gain perspective and Portugal allowed for big waves and big perspective. Hesitate, pause, ponder……………..repeat. What would taking on the role of president of the NY Chapter of SMPS mean, what could I expect, what would the commitment be, what exactly would be expected of me? How would I fulfill the duties of this role and the commitment of my role as president and the demands of marketer at a mid-size engineering firm? Questions that each of us ask ourselves when we are presented with a challenge. Whether that opportunity is a new initiative at your firm, a change in position or title or moving to a new region. My first instinct was to run and avoid the task put forth but my gut instinct was, “Why wouldn’t I do this?” (more…)

Well, here it is August already. The last month of my term as your President. And while I’m still riding high off the earlier activities of the month and looking back on our fantastic year as a Chapter, I can’t help but think…what if? What if I knew then what I know now? How could this year have been different? (more…)

Along with several others of you, I’ve begun preparation for the Certified Professional Services Marketer’s exam, aka Boot Camp. As I was flipping through the official SMPS CPSM Study Guide 3.0© this morning, I came across an interesting point right there on Page 6: “The achievement of goals is directly dependent on self control.”

Funny how things happen sometimes…While I was freaking out and wondering how I managed to add yet one more thing to my plate, I found myself reading about self-knowledge, aka metacognition, and along came the realization that all of this really is under my control. (more…)

Ahhh…summer. I LOVE summer. And it’s finally here! As the weather warms and the days grow longer, we become more social, filling our calendars with happy hours, barbeques, and picnics. Before you know it, vacation brain sets in, and we’re all in la-la-land for a few weeks…or months. But anyone in AEC marketing and BD knows that this business rarely slows and certainly never stops for the summer, and neither does SMPS! (more…)
