Merci beaucoup…Vielen dank…Muchas gracias…Grazie mille…Muito obrigado…Tack så mycket…Bol’shoye spasibo…OK, you catch my drift! How many ways do you know how to say ‘thank you’ or ‘thank you very much’ for that matter? Whatever language you use, I hope you use it every day to express this important sentiment. For me, I often feel as though I can’t say it enough. When I think about SMPS in particular, I am pretty much BUSTING with thanks for the SMPS’ers I know and meet every day. I bring this up because, as many of us are about to take off to join our loved ones on the one day a year when we break bread and express our gratitude, I would ask that you take a moment to thank the people in your professional circles. I’ll start! (more…)

For me, October conjures up images of pumpkins, changing leaves, brisk weather, and fun costumes. It’s by far my favorite time of year, especially in New York, where the air is alive with the first cool breezes after a long, hot summer. For SMPS New York, October is an exciting time filled with fantastic fall events and final planning for our biggest event of the year, THE Marketing Event (TME)! As I sit here marveling over how much activity is brewing behind the scenes this fall, my Halloween-obsessed mind gets a kick out of imagining our chapter leaders dressed up as sorcerers and witches, busily casting spells and brewing magic potions. In a sense, they actually do this in real life, except that the potions they are brewing are in the form of imaginative educational programming and creating opportunities for our members to get the most out of our organization. As our magicians wrap up our October events and put the finishing touches on TME planning, I am reminded of the real magic that lies at the core of our organization—the magic that is our amazing volunteers. Without volunteers, where would we be? The win-win situation is that, not only do volunteers make the SMPS world go ’round, but they also get to grow and learn through their volunteering experience.

If you are wondering how to get the most out of your SMPS membership, I hope you’ll consider getting in on the magic of volunteering. (more…)

If you would have told me five years ago that in 2017, I would be living in Manhattan, working in a job I love, and leading one of the largest chapters of a national organization, I may not have believed you. But guess what? It happened, and I couldn’t be more grateful!

My journey in this industry has spanned more than thirteen years, but in many ways, it feels like it is just beginning. This crazy ride has taken me from coast to coast, from a Ph.D. program, to an office manager position at an engineering firm, to a proposal team, to getting an MBA in Marketing, to several Board positions, to sitting in my office today, as a senior marketer in charge of what I love most…client events. I can say with confidence that a special friend has been by my side on this journey, supporting me through the ups and downs, providing endless opportunities for me to grow as an individual, while at the same time allowing me to add value to my marketing team and to my firm. That special friend is named SMPS, and for so many reasons, I am forever indebted to this amazing organization.

If you’ve met me in the last couple of years, you’ve probably noticed a purple tint to my life, both personally and professionally. What’s with all the purple? I think it’s time to let you in on my purple secret…

It’s true. Time does fly when you’re having a good time! It’s hard to believe that just over a year ago I accepted the honor of leading the New York Chapter of SMPS.

It seems like only yesterday when we began planning the year to come and I was equal parts excited and nervous at the prospect of what lies ahead. Adrenaline kicked in soon enough and the nervousness turned into a drive and vigor to get going with the planning of the SMPS year of programs, networking and professional development. Not having had the opportunity to serve as VP/President Elect previously I relied on my intuition, your confidence in me and, most importantly, on the talents of a Board that never failed to step up to the plate. What does professional achievement mean for you?

For some, achieving means having others view them as successful; for others achieving means to do something they have longed to do regardless what others may think. A dictionary definition of achievement is “to accomplish something, especially by great effort or great courage”. How do we measure the value of the recognition of our achievements versus the achievement itself? (more…)

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”— Winston Churchill. This quote struck a cord with me. It prompted me to think more inclusively about my service, my efforts at volunteerism. While I was fortunate enough to be handed down the spirit of giving back and paying forward by parents who embraced that idea, I realized that I needed to broaden my scope of possibilities. (more…)

Giving and receiving gifts is always a welcome activity in my life. It brings such joy to see the receiver of a gift light up with glee when they receive something special. And truth be told, I love getting a present (hint, hint-JK), especially when it is a surprise. Being the recipient of the gift has its own special sentiments especially when the offering is an expression of the thoughtfulness of the giver. I had the good fortune earlier this year of being part of a workshop exercise, which asked each of us to actively listen to the goals of our group members, as expressed through a story. We had to respond with a suggestion that would help them bring a goal or aspiration one step closer to realization. Our group of marketers, of varying experience levels, had to openly relate a goal, personal or professional and in return those of us listening gave our written response on a gift card. The recipient of the gift card could then do as they wish with the gift. (more…)

I attended the Women’s March in Albany, NY this past January. It was one of many hundreds of marches throughout the state, the country and the world. There I witnessed what was seemingly a sea of women walking strong in the streets of Albany. The march concluded at West Capital Park, which is wedged between the State Assembly building and the NY State Capital, for the speeches that sought to capture the spirit of the event. What I truly saw, in the crowd of 7,000 strong, was a canvas of women (some young, some very old), children, veterans, people of color, men, disabled people, immigrants from all sorts of places, middle aged, LGBT folks, and many others. To me, it was a continuation of the conversation of the SMPS Diversity and Inclusion lunch that I had participated in just one day prior. (more…)
