TRI-STATE CLIENT PANEL: The "Real" in Pharma Real Estate, presented by SMPS-NY, SMPS-Philly and IPS


Once coined as “the medicine chest of the world,” New Jersey's legacy took a dramatic shift during the recession with large pharmaceutical companies decommissioning their massive campuses and leaving the state. Despite the departures and consolidations, NJ still houses 14 of the 20 top pharmaceutical companies in the country and continues to attract smaller and generic companies seeking to grow into the tri-state area.

Join us for a conversation focused on trends, real estate growth plans, and challenges specific to the pharmaceutical industry in the NJ, PA, and NY tri-state area. This event is jointly hosted by SMPS-NY New Jersey Affiliate and SMPS Philadelphia.

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

Peter Gallagher

VP, Strategic Affairs

Teligent, Inc.


Peter joined Teligent in 2014 as the Vice President of Strategic Affairs. He leads the design and construction of the company’s facility expansion in New Jersey, which includes a new isolator-based injectable manufacturing capability.

He has nearly 20 years of strategic planning, operational and corporate affairs experience, including roles at Bausch + Lomb, Merck and Schering-Plough. Peter has managed post-merger integration in the US and Latin America, and has also led new product development & commercialization teams.

Peter began his career as a Lieutenant in the US Navy’s nuclear power program. He holds an MBA from New York University and a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia.

John Wilkinson

John leads Merck’s global real estate services team which is responsible for partnering with the business areas to develop global real estate strategies, the management of the company’s workplace of the future program and the execution of all real estate transactions.

Since joining Merck in 1999, John has held positions of increasing responsibility within, strategic facilities and capital management, research business operations, manufacturing network strategy and global real estate. John holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University and an MBA from Lehigh University. He is also a certified Merck Six Sigma Black Belt.

Thomas Kaufman

Associate Director, Corporate Real Estate

United Therapeutics


As associate director of United Therapeutics’ corporate real estate department, Thomas is responsible for site due diligence, acquisitions, planning, design and construction. In his 7 years with United Therapeutics, he has overseen more than $300 M worth of projects and has helped grow the real estate portfolio by more than 500,000 sqft. In addition to building the facilities required by United Therapeutics to produce its life-saving therapies, Thomas and the corporate real estate department strive to create spaces that are physical manifestations of United Therapeutic’s values. Prior to joining UT, Thomas worked on the planning and execution of the District of Columbia’s Water and Sewer capital improvement program. Thomas holds a degree in international studies from American University. Thomas lives in Washington D.C. with his wife and 19 month old daughter.

Alan Levy has 16+ years of diverse experience in the pharmaceutical industry including Program and Project Management, Sustainability, Engineering and Design, Maintenance and Reliability Engineering, and Commissioning and Qualification. He is currently Sr. Program Manager for Mace North America, a large Project Consultancy firm out of the UK. Within Mace, Levy serves as the Global Sustainability Lead, Global Risk Lead, and Regional Master Planner on a multi-site, international R&D Program for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), as well as North American Sustainability Lead for the financial company Northern Trust.

Professionally, Levy is a Past President of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE), and he holds the distinction of being ISPE’s ‘2015 International Member of the Year’. Representing the Pharma industry, he was also named “Delaware Valley Young Engineer of the Year” in 2013 by the Engineers’ Club of Philadelphia. Levy holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, a Master’s Certificate in Applied Project Management from Villanova University.
