The Annual Meeting and Liberty Ball celebrates the outstanding efforts in Marketing Communications and Professional Achievements. The evening will be hosted by improv extraordinaire Scott Stelzer, and will begin with a networking cocktail hour, followed by a formal sit-down dinner. Based out of New York City, Michael leads the US design team for projects of varying size, scope, and complexity. Over his tenure, he has completed over ten (10) million square feet of corporate, retail, and experiential spaces across the globe. Michael is highly collaborative with the project teams and is known for his constant goal of exceeding expectations. Michael supports the US marketing and business development team by actively participating in the proposal, interview, external communications and graphic design processes. He is an avid hand sketcher and his doodles are found in many of our marketing materials. He specializes in concept innovation and development, with a strong foundation in workplace strategy, master project planning, product design, brand translation to built spaces, and project needs analyses. Michael is an expert in materials, artwork, and furnishing recommendations, all of which enable him and his team to meet a high-quality benchmark consistently.
An innovative thinker with a record of creating results-driven communications, Lauren has been helping design firms tell their stories for 14 years. As Director of Marketing for Gensler’s New York office, Lauren works closely with leadership to advance the Gensler's business goals in the New York market. Prior to this, Lauren led marketing efforts for STUDIOS Architecture and Handel Architects. She has been involved in SMPS-NY for her entire career, serving as Director of Communications and Professional Development, and President of the Chapter from 2008-09. In 2004, she founded THE Marketing Event (TME), a full-day professional development symposium.
For over 25 years Nancy Kleppel has consistently delivered real, measurable results for A/E/C industry firms. Her success stems from persuasively articulating the objective value her clients provide to their own clientele. She began her career as a practicing architectural designer and shifted focus to business development in 1997 as Director of Business Development for SOM NY. She understands the challenges firms face in building a design identity and gaining recognition in a highly competitive environment. As a Principal at Appleseed Strategy she brings clarity and focus to that effort, providing strategy and management advice, client and project development, branding, communications and outreach for design and construction professionals. Nancy is a native New Yorker and holds a B. A. from Brown and a M. Arch from Harvard.
Jane brings over 20 years of experience marketing and coaching architectural and engineering firms. She specializes in strategic planning, branding, marketing communications and client services. A Fellow in SMPS and former President of the Long Island Chapter, Jane is a frequent national speaker and published writer on marketing strategies, team building, creating a business development culture and more. She’s co-author of the monograph Architecture as a Design Partnership, and author of articles published in Contract Magazine, Real Estate Weekly, New York Real Estate Journal and New York Construction News. She serves on the SMPS NY Programs Committee and has served as a three-time Juror for the SMPS National Marketing Communication Awards.
Larry Fuersich, publisher of Visual Profile Books, a New York-based publishing house for books on architecture, interior design and graphic design, began his career in book publishing in 1970. Holder of an MBA from the University of Cincinnati, Fuersich has published over 650 books on a wide range of architecture and design topics, featuring the work of design firms located in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia. Among the highlights of his publishing career are the selection of Visual Profile Books to publish the 150th Anniversary Book of the American Institute of Architects, the publishing of Dallas Modern for the Dallas Architecture Forum, and the publishing of HLW 125 / Better Performance by Design, a monograph produced for HLW International’s 125th anniversary. To meet leading architects and designers and to attend major trade conferences, he travels frequently to such destinations as California, Texas, Florida, Asia and Europe.
Sharyn Yorio is the Director of Client Development for VJ Associates, a cost consulting and scheduling firm. Sharyn brings over 20 years of experience in marketing and business development for the A/E/C industry. She is an SMPS Mentor and has taught classes on the principles of marketing and business development at Pratt Institute and New York University as an Adjunct Professor. Sharyn is a Certified Professional Marketer and a Fellow of SMPS. Sharyn is serving as the Co-Chair for the 2017 Northeast Regional Conference. She was the 2014 recipient of the NYC SMPS Chapter’s Pinnacle Award.
James Kent has more than 25 years of experience in marketing and communications for scientific and technical organizations in the U.S. and Europe. Since joining Thornton Tomasetti in 2007, he has applied his passion for making technical subjects accessible and engaging as the firm has grown into an industry leader. He leads internal and external communications, media relations, Web and online communications, and firm wide marketing functions.
Ida Cheinman is founding principal and creative director of the strategic brand communications firm Substance151 and past president of SMPS Maryland. She has over 20 years of professional services branding and marketing experience, specializing in brand strategy and design across print and digital. With a niche focus on the A/E/C industry, her work has earned multiple awards and industry recognition both nationally and internationally. Ida frequently speaks and writes on the subjects of branding, marketing and design. Ida holds her MFA in graphic design from Towson University, BA in graphic design from the State University of New York, and diploma from the School of Applied Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia. She has served on a number of nonprofit boards, including USGBC Maryland, Social Enterprise Alliance Maryland, ULI Baltimore Executive Committee, and currently serving on the board of the Open Architecture Collaborative (formerly Architects for Humanity).
