Over the years, both in my job and in my various roles within SMPS, I have become somewhat of a communications evangelist. Having experienced firsthand the consistently grueling schedule, the demand for multi-faceted skillsets, and the constant flow of creativity it takes to put forth excellent communications, I have come to appreciate all those who do this day in and day out for their firms. I know just how much blood, sweat, and tears go into these communications, and those who know me can attest to the fact that I am always the first to sing their praises. For this reason, I am so excited that with the Liberty Awards, our chapter provides an opportunity for talented communications professionals to shine.

Liberty Award winners will be honored on June 7 at the Liberty Ball, which will take place at the NYC Fire Museum. The theme of this year’s Liberty Ball is “Be Bold, Be Brilliant, Be Brave!” a fitting theme, considering the unique venue that honors firefighters, NYC’s bravest heroes. The venue made us think about heroes, and how AEC marketers can often be considered as our industry’s heroes. I mean, how many times have you or your team “saved the day” by getting your website up and running on time, or “saved the project” by pushing into the wee hours of the morning to get something out the door, or “saved the firm” by providing a solution to a potentially disastrous PR issue? If any of this sounds familiar, then you should realize that you as marketers are your firm’s heroes.

The Liberty Awards program honors marketers in two ways: the Marketing Communications Awards (MCAs) honor heroes that have put forth excellent communications, and the Professional Achievement Awards honor individual marketing heroes of all levels. In keeping with this year’s theme, we added two new professional achievement award categories, the Humanitarian of the Year (Marketing Philanthropist Award), and the Marketing Hero of the Year (Grace Under Pressure Award). PURPLE POW-WOW WITH SMPS-NY MEMBER JESSICA SCHRADER
As always, I like to end these posts with an opportunity for you to meet the members of our chapter. I had a great time getting to know this fabulous member at our New Member Mixer last month. Jessica is a talented, creative individual with a graphic design background, who jumped right in to volunteer on the SMPS-NY Special Events Committee. A short look at Jessica’s story is below.
- 1. How did you become involved in the AEC industry? I’m a Graphic Designer by trade, and from the start of my career I’ve always taken an interest in how great design and planning can shape the Built Environment and how someone experiences a space. After graduating, I was hired by an architecture firm in NYC. Originally, my work centered around Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) but I was quickly brought on board to help the crackerjack Marketing Team elevate the design of their external marketing materials- including but not limited to the firm’s website, proposals, and brochures.
- 2. What brought you to SMPS? As I moved up the ranks within my current design studio, it became clear that I needed to polish my skills in marketing and business development. A few friends of mine brought my attention to the SMPS Mentorship Program, which has been invaluable to my professional development. The incredible amount of support and knowledge I’ve received through my mentor and the rest of the group has been so rewarding that I can’t wait to be involved with SMPS more!
- 3. What do you hope to get out of your SMPS New York membership this year? Initially I was really overwhelmed by the endless opportunities within SMPS- it’s definitely a challenge to decide on just one initiative when there are so many interesting avenues available. After a lot of research (the struggle is real!) I recently signed on to the Special Events Committee, as well as stepping up to design the logo for THE Marketing Event (TME). I’m so excited to start branching out into the SMPS community and show my chops!
- 4. If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would the slogan be? My mother is the biggest fan of The Beatles you’ll ever meet- trust me. It was an EVENT when The Beatles Anthology was released. And it might sound cheesy, but I really do believe that “You get by (and then some!) with a little help from your friends, by creating and maintaining a real community of relationships built on sharing and reciprocation.” I’m no Lennon/McCartney, but you get the drift.
If there’s anything the past 10 years has shown me, it’s that you won’t get anywhere without great relationships within the community you are in- whether it’s the people you work with, your clients, the vendors you use, or the greater AEC community. Managing and maintaining the relationships within your community includes not only sharing the knowledge and expertise you have, but also being a positive, encouraging, understanding, and humble person.
- 5. What’s your purple power? (i.e. what makes you remarkable?) My purple power is the ability to truly connect with the people I meet. It’s remarkable how much you can learn and grow by simply listening to the people you meet. I absolutely believe that real success is impossible without building strong, reciprocal relationships.
