MEMBER OF THE MONTH | March 2018

March 1st, 2018

Fadi Asmar

Marketing Coordinator and Graphic Designer

LERA

Holding two graduate degrees concentrated in urban planning and digital photography, March’s Member of the Month has utilized his extensive educational background and marketing talents to become a valued asset of our New York chapter. Fadi Asmar’s life journey to New York is both interesting and inspiring, as it best exemplifies his drive and determination. Fadi currently serves as a Marketing Coordinator and Graphic Designer at LERA where he is perfecting his skills within the AEC industry and has extended himself to become a contributing member to our Chapter’s Coordinator’s Club. Let’s read below as Fadi has shared some of his thoughts and ideas with us.

    1. 1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York City?
I am Lebanese, born in Aleppo, Syria. I moved to New York from Beirut, Lebanon. How I ended up in New York is a little bit of an interesting story. Sometimes, I think the 2011 tsunami in Japan brought me here. To elaborate, I lived in Japan for about a year, until the March 2011 earthquake there, that changed all my plans. Long story short, after the earthquake I had to leave Japan due to reasons beyond my control. Shortly, after returning to Beirut I realized I needed to do something in my life as stimulating as the move to Japan was. So, I applied for a master’s program at the School of Visual Arts and moved here. It was a quick decision, as I never thought about moving to New York or going to an art school before. From there, life unfolded and I started great new beginnings here.

  • 2. Can you tell us more about our Chapter’s Coordinator’s Club for those members that have not yet participated?
The Coordinator’s Club is one of the most casual and easy to attend SMPS events. Besides the fact that it is a valuable learning resource that helps you advance in your marketing careers, it’s also a great opportunity for SMPS members to meet, discuss and share ideas or challenges they face in their careers. Also, did I mention it doesn’t cost anything to attend?! So, I really recommend all members to take advantage of such a great learning and networking opportunity.

  • 3. What are some challenges that you face daily in your career and how do you overcome them?
A very last-minute deadline or a vague RFP language requiring a ton of information are things we encounter almost daily in this industry. The best way to deal with any challenge is to stay calm and do whatever it takes, from extra research to providing extra time to get things done.

  • 4. What degree(s) do you hold, and from what school(s)?
I have a B.S. in Business Administration & Marketing from the Lebanese American University (LAU), a Master’s in Urban Planning & Policy from the American University of Beirut (AUB), and a Master’s in Professional Studies in Digital Photography from the School of Visual Arts (SVA).

  • 5. Describe your perfect Saturday.
A perfect Saturday starts with a long morning walk taking photos, then brunch with friends and a movie night or possibly a night out in the city!
