MEMBER OF THE MONTH: October 2017

October 3rd, 2017

Liz Archer

Business Development Manager

Dewberry

October’s Member of the Month has successfully been able to harness her enthusiasm, passion, and diligence for the A/E/C industry throughout her 20 plus year career. Serving as the Business Development Manager for Dewberry, Liz Archer is a long-term, valued member of our New York chapter. She is a familiar face at events and a respected mentor within our organization. Throughout her career, Liz has accompanied her marketing role by working in the areas of community outreach and affirmative action compliance. Let’s read below as Liz has shared some of her thoughts and ideas with us.

    1. 1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York?
While I was born in NYC, I grew up in Northern California, first in Wine Country and then in Silicon Valley. My parents are from Minnesota so I say my “Os” like a Canadian or the folks in the movie Fargo. I came to New York to study Architecture at NYIT. They had a course called “Writing for Arts and Architecture” and taking it was my “AHA!” moment. From then on I knew what I wanted to do for my career.

  • 2. What degree(s) do you hold, and from what schools?
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Technology from New York Institute of Technology and a Marketing Certificate from the NYU Stern School of Business for Continuing Education.

  • 3. Describe your perfect Saturday.
Time with my three spirited boys, brunch with a friend, Zumba class, a museum visit and Salsa dancing to finish the day.

  • 4. How has being a member of SMPS influenced your career?
SMPS helped me figure out that I am in love with the STORY of design, construction and development. The characters, the challenges, the solutions, the drama, the survival, the clients, the staff, the publications, the competition, the teaming – it is a source of endless fascination for me and my involvement in this industry through SMPS gives me a deep gratification that lights me up! I’ll never forget who introduced me to SMPS – Phil Cooney. At the time he was working for Helpern Architects and he said “You have to join this organization.” SMPS became the center of my career. The programs and leadership training helps me so much and the people I meet and relationships I develop helps me even more. Two people, in particular, that I met through SMPS really reached out and made a difference in my life. Gina Bedoya became my mentor – especially for leadership. Carol Doscher coached me with public speaking and opened up a whole new way of thinking for me. I am grateful for all my SMPS community, but these two ladies gave me the tools to fly, have fun with my work and, in turn, to mentor to and help others.

  • 5. What blogs do you read on a regular basis?
I like to maintain my retro edge so I just want to go on the record saying that Metropolis and Vogue (hard copy) magazines are awesome! As for blogs, I like the NAIOP-NJ weekend brief. NAIOP holds a special place in my heart because it is about commercial real estate and development with a special twist: they lobby the government for infrastructure funding. They really “get it” and they understand how important infrastructure is for business. I also enjoy Gretchen Rubin’s “Moment of Happiness – The Happiness Project Blog”. Lastly, I like my online subscription to the NY Times. They prepackage everything for me and curate it and send me cute emails with headings such as “A Special Email for Our Subscribers: Recommended Reading.” By doing this, I get a sense of what is going on, in a nutshell, and can opt to drill down on articles covering issues that I really care about.
