MEMBER OF THE MONTH: June 2017

June 1st, 2017

Nicole Veenstra

Marketing Coordinator

Langan Engineering & Environmental Services

June’s member of the month is a welcomed asset to the SMPS community through her contributions on the special events committee. Nicole Veenstra currently serves as a marketing coordinator at Langan and has quickly become a valued member of our New York chapter. With a formal education in journalism, Nicole’s talents within the A/E/C industry are evidenced by her diligence towards the discipline. Read below, as Nicole has shared some of her thoughts and ideas with us.

  1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York?
I was born and raised in Northern New Jersey … just close enough to fondly gaze at the city skyline while still living that suburban life. I love where I grew up but I’ve always felt happiest in the city so I moved a few months after joining Langan in December 2015.
  2. What motivated you to join the Special Events Committee and what is the committee currently working on?
Soon after becoming a member of SMPS New York, my boss – Atena Vladu – encouraged me to join a committee, saying it was a great way to get more involved. Special Events caught my eye because it gives me the opportunity to work behind the scenes and transform an idea into reality (aka a successful event). Right now we’re in the midst of planning/finalizing details for the Annual Meeting and Liberty Ball on June 8!
  3. What are some challenges that you face daily in your career and how do you overcome them?
I’d have to say the biggest challenges I’ve faced involve RFPs because I didn’t have any experience with agency forms (hello, SF 330!), complicated RFP/RFQ language, technical abbreviations, etc., when I started at Langan. I overcome said challenges by asking (a lot of) questions and writing down the answers so I can refer to my notes in the future.
  4. What degree(s) do you hold, and from what schools?
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Rider University.
  5. Describe your perfect Saturday.
Ooh, fun question … I’d wake up at a later-than-normal-yet-still-reasonable time and, once ready to emerge from my apartment, enjoy some brunch with friends. During the afternoon, I’d stop in (at least) one coffee shop for (at least one) cappuccino and then walk around the city. Or visit an art museum/go to the movies if the weather is subpar.
