Rory McMahon

Marketing Manager

Kallen & Lemelson, Consulting Engineers, LLP

May’s Member of the Month has made his contributions known within the Membership Committee, and is quickly becoming a recognized face within our SMPS New York Community. Rory McMahon currently serves as the Marketing Manager and sole marketing professional for Kallen & Lemelson, Consulting Engineers, LLP, where his passion for business development is being realized. Let’s read below as Rory has shared some of his thoughts and ideas with us.

1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York?
I grew up at east end of Long Island in Southampton, about an hour and a half from NYC. It’s such a beautiful place to live, especially during the summer months. I ended up choosing a College that was in Springfield, Massachusetts. It provided me with the opportunity to see how people lived outside of New York and I really enjoyed it, even though most of my roommates were Pats / Red Sox fans. After graduating College, I moved to NYC because of the career potential.

2. How has being a member of SMPS influenced your career thus far?
I recently took part in the SMPS Mentorship Program and worked with Brian Ferry as his Protégée. It was a chance to further define my short and long term professional goals and put everything into an action plan; it helped a lot. His support and insight allowed me to transition new ideas into the workplace and my career in general. Brian did an outstanding job providing guidance. I would encourage everyone to participate in the Mentorship Program.

3. Can you better describe your role at Kallen & Lemelson, Consulting Engineers, LLP and what responsibilities your job entails?
As the only marketing professional in our 40-person MEP/FP design firm, I’m responsible for all marketing and business development efforts. It can be overwhelming at times but I like to be involved in a lot of different things; there’s always something to work on. Recently, I’ve had a strong interest in the potential for meeting new clients and bringing in new business. I enjoy acting as a representative of my firm to clients, organizations and business associates.

4. Can you provide some advice for those that are new to the A/E/C industry?
Get involved in SMPS and network. Participate in the Mentorship Program which will help you identify any gaps in skill or experience. A lot of questions can be answered by fellow members and there are excellent resources to make an easier transition into a career in the A/E/C industry. Also, check out the book Selling the Invisible by Harry Beckwith.

5. What are some of your favorite movies and television shows?
So many come to mind. I usually judge a movie or show by how many times I can watch it and still be entertained. Show’s like The Wire, The Sopranos, Chappelle Show, Game of Thrones, The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Family Guy, Breaking Bad, IASIP and movies like Interstellar, The Godfather 1 and 2, Goodfellas, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Avatar, and The Dark Knight are at the top of my list. No matter how many times I watch these shows or movies, I always enjoy them.
