MEMBER OF THE MONTH: March 2017

March 2nd, 2017

Matthew Barlow

Marketing Coordinator

Dattner Architects

With a formal education in history, architecture, and web design, March’s Member of the Month has perfectly harmonized his talents within the A/E/C marketing industry. Matthew Barlow currently serves as a marketing coordinator at Dattner Architects, while working on our chapter’s Programs Committee. As a more recent member, Matthew has quickly been able to integrate himself into the best parts of SMPS, and has become a recognized face at our New York events. His creativity, intelligence, and drive are all valued assets to our chapter. Let’s read below as Matthew has shared some of his thoughts and ideas with us.

1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York City?
I grew up in Connecticut and moved to Boulder, followed by Boston for school. Growing up in an arguably suburban area more than two hours away from both Boston and New York City, I was close enough to know the energy and opportunity associated with living in these urban environments, but just far enough away to be left out of the experience. So as soon as I was able to, I moved to New York.

2. What degree(s) do you hold, and from what schools?
After completing a BA in History, a minor in Web Design, and additional business studies from the University of Colorado, I attended Boston Architectural College for MArch courses. Not exactly the typical route into AEC marketing, but I’m glad I landed where I did.

3. Describe your perfect Saturday.
Ideally it would be spent somewhere in the mountains in Colorado (at least during this time of year), where so much of my undergrad experience was spent. Here in the city it would have to be going to eat at ilili, regardless of the season.

4. Can you tell us more about your involvement with the Programs Committee and what new things the committee is working on?
I joined the Programs Committee shortly after I joined SMPS this past spring. So far working with Kathryn and seeing the committee quickly grow, both in numbers and the content of our programs, has been a blast. Some of our newest plans focus on re-imagining program formats, including decentralized panels that break down into small roundtable discussions, a program dedicated solely to City & Public Agencies, and an interactive “Panel” that coincides with on-site tours of select project sites.

5. What blogs do you read on a regular basis?
Too many, but I always check YIMBY. They’ve even started to feature the latest New York City RFP’s.
