MEMBER OF THE MONTH | February 2017

February 1st, 2017

Jackie Terpstra

Marketing Coordinator

Thornton Tomasetti

Passionate, career oriented, organized, and diligent best describe February’s Member of the Month! Jackie Terpstra is quickly becoming a valued member of our New York chapter though her contributions to the special events committee. Serving as a marketing coordinator at Thornton Tomasetti, Jackie describes the influence of SMPS during the last year as immeasurable. She is consistently growing and learning within the A/E/C industry as she actively participates in multiple facets of our organization. Let’s read below as Jackie has shared some of her thoughts and ideas with us.

1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York City?
I’ve been a New Yorker my entire life. I grew up in Pine Bush, NY which is about an hour and a half north of the City (what many would consider upstate – but anyone from that area definitely would not). Growing up, I always felt such an energy whenever I came into the City and knew that this is where I needed to be for my career. The City offers so many opportunities to network and meet new people. It’s really important to leverage those opportunities to connect and build strong professional relationships, especially in this industry.

2. How has being a member of SMPS influenced your career thus far?
Immeasurably. I’ve been a member for about a year now and it’s been a great ride already. I truly believe in working hard for what you want and succeeding on purpose. I knew that joining SMPS would be the catalyst for that mission. One of the first events I attended was last year’s Build Business Conference and it really renewed this spark in me to get the most out of my career. From there, my first order of business was to find a committee to volunteer on to become more active. I decided to join the Special Events Committee because I figured there’s no better way to meet people than at parties, and what’s more fun than planning and coordinating events! In such a short amount of time I’ve been able to meet new colleagues and develop friendships, sharpen my marketing and communication skills, and confidently network in a room full of strangers.

3. Can you better describe your role at Thornton Tomasetti and what responsibilities your job entails?
As a marketing coordinator at Thornton Tomasetti, I support multiple offices by preparing a wide variety of proposals, prequalification packages and presentations. We provide engineering design, investigation and analysis services to clients worldwide on projects of every size and level of complexity. With ten different practices and offices in the United States, Canada, and in Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, there’s something new every day! I really enjoy the fast pace, exciting work and collaboration between our technical management and marketing staff.

4. Can you provide some advice for those that are new to the A/E/C industry?
Invest in yourself. Get involved and be honest about what you do and don’t know because it’s the best way to learn. I recently read “The Growth Game: A Millennial’s Guide to Professional Development.” One of my favorite takeaways is quoted by the author Eddy Ricci Jr., “Your career is your biggest asset, so it will require some financial investment … don’t be afraid to invest in a library of self-help career books, lunches and dinners with influential people, and ongoing courses to build a career bedrock.”

5. What are some of your favorite movies and television shows?
I’m a such a sucker for a good tv drama. Right now I am hooked on This is Us (even if every episode makes me cry). When that’s not on, pretty much anything on HGTV will do! Some of my favorites include Fixer Upper, House Hunters and Love it or List it. For movies, I’m definitely a chick-flick kind of girl. Whenever Father of the Bride is on I will literally stop what I’m doing to watch it! I recently just saw Eat, Pray, Love and really enjoyed that too – you can’t go wrong with Julia Roberts!
