As an influential member of our THE Marketing Event Committee, our chapter is pleased to honor Monica Hatcher as November 2016’s Member of the Month. Monica serves as the Director of Marketing at Sam Schwartz where she brings ten-plus years of experience in the A/E/C industry. Her formal graduate-level education is complemented by her drive and communication capabilities. She is a valued member of the New York chapter. Let’s read below as Monica shares some of her thoughts and ideas with us.

1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York City?
I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, raised in Clearwater, Florida, and lived abroad in Melbourne, Australia, for 12 years. I returned to America in 2015 and started a nation-wide job search that included Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. Sam Schwartz presented the best career opportunity, and I have always wanted to live in New York City, so it was an easy choice.

2. What motivated you to join THE Marketing Event Committee and what is the committee currently working on?
The committee mentioned that they would like to change the structure for this year’s THE Marketing Event (TME). Throughout my career I have been involved in the creation of events, and as a newcomer to SMPS and NYC I thought a fresh perspective, experience and passion could be of value. Being involved in the development for this year’s TME—Changing the Game has been a great avenue to meet other passionate committee members—such as Deborah Rosenberg, director of TME—who are all committed to ensure the event will be a success.

3. What are some challenges that you face daily in your career and how do you overcome them?
Over the past year I have had the challenge and opportunity of building Sam Schwartz’s marketing team from the ground up. To overcome this challenge, I observed the needs of each of our offices and shaped our team to help our firm achieve its goals. I feel like this is an ever-changing process as the company and marketing team grows.

4. What degree(s) do you hold, and from what schools?
University of Melbourne, Australia—Victorian College of the Arts | Master of Fine Arts (MFA)
Florida State University—Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)

5. Describe your perfect Saturday.
Waking up with no alarm…and then a walk to my favorite coffee shop after going through the local market. I like spending the rest of my day enjoying the sun in the garden, preferably with friends, and venturing out to dinner somewhere close to home.
