July’s Member of the Month is a welcomed addition to the SMPS New York Chapter. Sara Cook holds a Bachelor’s Degree from York College in Public Relations and is a Marketing Specialist at VHB. Her contributions to the special events committee are highlighted by her dedication and enthusiasm. Let’s read below as Sara has shared some of her thoughts and ideas with us.
1. Where are you from originally and what brought you to New York City?
I was born and raised on Long Island. I attended college in Pennsylvania and always thought about planting my roots there, but you just can’t beat the New York culture.
2. What motivated you to join the Special Events Committee and what is the committee currently working on?
Honesty is the best policy right? I wasn’t quite sure how to get involved. With a little help from my Managing Director and Alicia, I was steered toward the Special Events Committee. Currently we are planning the Member Appreciation Event and I cannot wait to help pick the theme.
3. What are some challenges that you face daily in your career and how do you overcome them?
As an emerging professional in the industry, I need to balance my strong desire for independence and project ownership with continuing to learn about the industry, the language/tone we use, and the processes we use. I overcome this challenge by asking questions and showing my collaborative nature while being proactive and jumping into new assignments when I see an opportunity to fill a team need.
4. What degree(s) do you hold, and from what schools?
I hold a BA in Public Relations from York College of Pennsylvania with minors in Speech Communication, Marketing and Sociology.
5. Describe your perfect Saturday.
I would have to go with a day of fossil-hunting. As much as I love my job playing with words, most of my hobbies revolve around earth science. As it turns out, there are tons of rivers and parks in the tristate area that are filled with some seriously impressive relics.
