- Immediate Past President,
Nothing says “Back to it!” more than that slight cooling of the air, and the sudden rush as everyone in the city returns to their regular busy schedules. The SMPS year also hits the restart button this month, setting off the New York chapter’s “Year of Engagement.” I’m so excited to share what we have in store for you—real and tangible benefits built right into your SMPS membership, and opportunities for engagement at all levels!

On October 1st, you can engage with six (yes, six!) mayors at our annual joint Westchester Affiliate and Construction Institute panel discussion. They’ll be talking about the different factors that influence their cities’ urban resurgences. I can’t wait to hear what this amazing group of local area dignitaries have to say about the current economic and political climate, as well as the social trends, that are shaping the landscape of these cities.
Throughout the upcoming year, engage with the AEC industry at our client panel breakfasts. Our higher education program on October 21st will provide insight into changes, challenges and new opportunities for upcoming projects at area colleges and universities. The following one will be a New Jersey Affiliate panel on Healthcare, which, given all the recent administrative changes and activity in that market, is not to be missed on November 12th.
Engage with your peers and be inspired by the industry’s most accomplished professionals as you learn new marketing, business development, and leadership skills and at our annual full-day professional development symposium on November 6th entitled New Horizons: Create | Engage | Inspire – TME 2015.
You can also engage with other members one-on-one at our after-work Spirits events. I always love these, because they’re a chance to interact with everyone in a more casual setting—a great opportunity not only to network, but also to make new friends in the industry. Our next one will be October 6th at The REFUGE in Melville, NY. The following Tuesday, October 13th, we’ll be meeting up at The Famished Frog in Morristown, NJ. If you missed last week’s event in Manhattan, pencil in the upcoming NYC one on November 17th.
You can also engage on a personal level, by becoming an SMPS volunteer. Our committees are always looking for assistance—whether it’s once a week or once a year! I’m sure you’ll find, like I have, that the more you give back to SMPS, the more you get out of it, whether it’s developing new skills or building that all-important network.
To get your company in on the benefits, consider engaging as a chapter or event sponsor. SMPS-NY sponsors enjoy a range of perks, from free event registrations to prominent visibility in email, web, and print communications and access to event attendee lists.
And nothing says engagement in your work more than becoming a Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM), which sets you apart as an industry expert who’s committed to the highest standards of professional excellence and expanding your knowledge. CPSM Week officially isn’t until next month (October 12–16), but we’re so excited, we’re getting the word out early. Check out our Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram feeds over the next few weeks to hear from New York’s CPSM’s and SMPS Fellows about the real-life benefits of certification.
So shake off those post-vacation doldrums by engaging with us at our upcoming events! I look forward to seeing each and every one of you live and in person very soon!
