Committees

The best way to get more out of SMPS is to join a committee. The New York Area Chapter is organized into the following committees:

Communications

The Communications Committee is charged with spreading the word about all of the chapter’s events and initiatives. Their responsibilities include maintaining the Chapter website, promoting sponsors, and designing ads, postcards, emails and handouts. With so much competition for people’s time and attention, their challenge is to make the Chapter’s materials engaging.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
Communications Committee members have the opportunity to hone their digital marketing skills, express their creativity, and better understand the organization by working with all other committees throughout the year to help promote all of the Chapter’s initiatives.

Director: Erika Capek

Leadership

The Leadership Committee promotes an awareness of leadership thinking and provides a platform for top performers and experts to share their knowledge on the topic of leadership. This initiative offers insights “to lead the way,” whether to enhance individual skills or develop leaders within an organization. The committee plans and coordinates monthly leadership lunches, a track at TME as well as a stand-alone event.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
Leadership Committee members have the chance to plan and coordinate a variety of events and explore the topic of leadership.

Director: Rhonda Cardone

Long Island Affiliate

For our members located in Long Island, the Long Island Affiliate hosts professional development seminars, including webinars, client panel programs, Spirits happy hours, and committee meetings that give you a chance to meet your peers and network with local contacts.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
Long Island Affiliate Committee members have the opportunity to build a network of local professionals from the AEC industry, help plan Spirits events, and develop upcoming programs. By being involved, you can help grow Long Island’s participation and promote SMPS-NY Chapter initiatives.

Director: Corrine Collins

Membership

The Membership Committee is dedicated to member engagement and to ensuring that each member benefits from what SMPS has to offer, both locally from the Chapter and from the Society at large. They focus on member recruitment, including mass and individual outreach, membership drives, and promotional activities at events. They also focus on member retention, ensuring that existing members at all levels receive the most value from their membership. The committee’s work touches all aspects of the Chapter’s activities, bringing membership value to each of the Chapter’s endeavors and enhancing member benefits.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
By joining the Membership Committee, you will be helping to recruit and shape the very people that are the future of SMPS.

Director: Atena Vladu

Professional Development

This committee holds three evening seminars focused on Marketing, BD and Leadership. Each of these sessions cover a wide range of information and practical skills – from basic tools of the trade for marketing coordinators to issues affecting the most senior marketers, business developers and principals. We also host Coordinators Club Brown Bag Lunches, a perfect way for marketers with less than four years of experience in the AEC industry to discuss topics relevant to their jobs. An important element of the Professional Development Committee is promoting and supporting the Professional Services Marketer Certification (CPSM) including a “boot camp” that helps those who are interested in becoming certified prepare for the exam.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
Professional Development Committee members have the opportunity to develop content and organize programs, interact with other committees, and support the chapter in educating marketers, business developers and principals.

Director: Michelle Santoro

Programs

For each of our client panel breakfast programs, the Programs Committee selects the topic, invites the speakers, and coordinates everything the day of the event. Their programs focus on timely topics affecting the AEC industry, providing great opportunities to stay informed about the latest trends and to network with potential clients.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
Hone your event planning and business development skills, and get great access to high profile clients!

Director: Kathryn Kucharski

Public Relations

The Public Relations Committee promotes awareness of SMPS-NY by maintaining mutually beneficial relationships between press outlets and digital media for its members and the AEC audience. They serve as the chapter’s spokesperson to manage the flow of information to the public and gain exposure for SMPS-NY. Responsibilities include writing pre- and post-event press releases, managing the organization’s LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter accounts, and maintaining press relationships.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
Public Relations Committee members have the opportunity to define and express the SMPS-NY voice, promote the Chapter, and gain invaluable press and media contacts in the AEC industry.

Director: Olivia Farquharson

Special Events

This committee handles the Chapter’s Annual Awards Gala and Awards Program, Holiday Party and the Spirits with SMPS-NY Networking Happy Hours. Event responsibilities include venue research and selection, catering, décor, day-of-event tasks, and awards program coordination, including administration of award submissions and planning of judging event.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
Special Events Committee members utilize their creative and organizational skills to plan some of the Chapter’s biggest events of the year!

Director: Jonas Foster

Sponsorship

Simply put, without the support of our sponsors, SMPS-NY would not be able to pursue our mission to advocate for, educate, and connect leaders in the building industry. The sponsorship committee spearheads the Chapter’s sponsorship activities and constantly evaluates how we can bring value to our sponsors. The committee conducts prospective and existing sponsor outreach as well as data tracking and the development of improved and enhanced sponsorship packages. They also coordinate the annual sponsor appreciation event.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
Sponsorship committee members have the opportunity to engage with firms from around the region (and beyond) and enjoy a tremendous sense of satisfaction as they both provide sponsors opportunities to grow their businesses and allow the chapter to flourish.

Director: Brian C. Ferry

THE Marketing Event (TME)

This committee plans TME every November. TME is an all-day symposium where hundreds of AEC professionals learn the latest trends in business from the smartest innovators. The symposium includes workshops divided into three tracks on a variety of Marketing, Business Development, and Leadership topics. Each attendee can pick and choose programs from the three tracks to customize a day tailored to his or her particular challenges and interests.

WHY JOIN THIS COMMITTEE?
TME Committee members have the opportunity to plan an all-day conference around the lessons they want to learn in our industry. Participate as a volunteer at the event, work with speakers on developing content and bring your logistical event-planning knowledge to the table to help us improve and advance the conference for years to come!

Director: Deborah A. Rosenberg
